contents: Placards and ordinances, i.e.: laws, rules and regulations issued by the Dutch local, provincial and national governments, were published in two forms in the 16th century: as a broadsheet (a sheet printed on one side) and meant to be hung at the town hall and other suitable places, and in the form of booklets, usually thin quartos like the one shown here, meant for the bookcases and drawers of the government officials. Up to the early 19th century hundreds of thousands of proclamations were published. This ordinance concerns decrees to oppose heresies and gives rules and regulations against the printing and distributing of banned books.
