contents: This emblem book appeared in the Latin edition in 1575 at Plantin's in Antwerp, with 25 engravings by Jan Wierix. The 1585 Leiden edition has the same copper engravings. Around 1580, also in the Northern Netherlands, copper engravings began to oust woodcuts for book illustrations. Antwerp artists from the environment of Plantin, such as the brothers Jan, Antonie and Hieronymus Wierix played a large role in the revival of illustrative art in the Netherlands.
