contents: From the late sixteenth century onwards, the Great Church in Edam had a Librije - a small library for pastors and students of the Latin school. Books could be read there, but not borrowed. To protect them from theft, they were chained: one end of the chain was fastened to a ring attached to the cover of the book and the other to a metal bar on top of the lectern. Apart from being read, the books were used for educational purposes: the church also housed the Latin School, and children's drawings have been found in some of the books. The photograph shows the bar above the lectern and a glimpse into the room where the Latin School was located.
