contents: Compositors at work on a `Linotype', named after the German Mergenthaler living in America and patented in 1885. Linotypes were used more and more from the 1890s. This apparatus could found fixed lines of text. This was done in the following way: the compositor pushed on one of the keys on the keyboard, which loosened a matrix which slid across a channel. When it was down, a line was formed. A bell warned the compositor if the line was full. He then pressed a lever which caused liquid lead to flow in the matrices from a boiler or sprayer. The burrs were removed by knives and the types were ready for use.
