contents: This illustration is from the oldest known description of the proceedings in a bookbinders' workshop in the Northern Netherlands. the author is Dirk de Bray who was registered in 1656 as an apprentice in the booksellers' guild of Haarlem. He came from a Haarlem artists' family and was to become a well-known painter, draughtsman and engraver. The illustration shows, besides the title in an opened book and two piles of books, the common binding for the Authorised Version (Statenbijbel) of tack leather, blind-tooled and with heavy brass fittings.
