contents: This woman is reading by candlelight. The open hearth has been stoked up. Another open book lies beside her. Does she want to compare a particular passage or is the book opened at that place by chance? The reader in question appears to be clothed 'en negligé'. And she has a somewhat extravagant house or nightcap on. There is such a stillness in the room. Perhaps she cannot sleep and has therefore put the cap on because of the cold which is still hanging in the room. Has she sought an escape in a book? There was quite a choice judging by the bookcase in the background.
