contents: This portrait of an old woman reading the Bible was painted by the Leiden painter, Gerrit Dou (1613-1675). Dou was a pupil of the young Rembrandt and the woman could be Rembrandt's mother. She is reading Luke XIX, the passage about the entry of Jesus into Jericho.
