contents: The story of Tijl Uilenspiegel was a very popular chapbook which was printed many, many times in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in the Northern and Southern Netherlands and in Germany. Typical of these chapbooks are the coarse woodcuts which were used again and again. Much of this very cheaply produced printed work has been lost. The booklets were literally read to pieces and seldom found their way to the large, usually scholarly, libraries.
