contents: From the turn of the century the bindings on children's books became more colourful and attractive. It was important that the illustration on the front should suggest an exciting and pleasant content. There was now a clear difference between boy's and girl's books in which stereotypical behaviour was praised and encouraged. Boys looked for adventure, they went forth into the wide world, made discoveries and followed the path of science and technology. And the tricks of the rascals among them (Kruimeltje, Pietje Bell) were tolerated with a smile.
