contents: Between 1595 an 1653 the larger formats of books in the Leiden University Library were chained to the bookcases to prevent theft. The binding shown here contains a 16th-century manuscript with the commentary of Johannes Chrysostomos on two letters by St Paul. It is the only binding in the Leiden University Library which still has the bronze library chain. The parchment bindings, with in the centre the arms of the university representing the goddess Athena in a cartouche, were characteristic of the Leiden University Library. Many of these have been preserved.
