contents: In 1832 the "Penny Magazine" (named after the instalments which cost a penny) was started in England. It was a pleasant, easily readable, non-specialist weekly for the general public with many illustrations (wood engravings); in 1833 a French successor followed and in 1834 came the Dutch version which was to continue until 1885. It was the precursor of our present illustrated weeklies. The "Nederlandsch Magazijn" is also the first publication in the Netherlands which used wood engravings on a large scale for its illustrations. It was a great success and managed to reach a public which until that time bought few, if any, books or magazines.
