contents: Book illustrations considerably supplemented the contents of the text. They allowed the readers an impression of faraway regions and foreign peoples, of exotic animals and plants, as is shown here in this book by Maria Sibylla Merian. This artist, originally from Germany, came from a well-known family of artists, scholars and booksellers, and had lived with her two daughters in the Netherlands since 1685. From 1699-1701 she stayed in Surinam, where she produced a large number of paintings of plants and insects. This book with 60 coloured engravings is based on them.
