contents: The eighteenth-century shop of Johannes Covens and Cornelis Mortier in the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam (on the presumption that this is a more or less accurate depiction) differs little from such a business in the seventeenth century. The figure of Atlas with the globe on his shoulders makes it extra clear that this was a specialist in maps of the whole world. Wealthy book and map sellers like Covens and Mortier were primarily to be found in The Hague, Amsterdam and Leiden.
