contents: In the course of the 19th century the number of books being published increased enormously, while there was clearly also a growing diversification in the supply on offer. As is seen in the accompanying poem to this picture, many a 19th-century bookseller could serve a varied public. The layout of the shop, with the stylish bookcases and counter, is typical for this period.
