contents: Interior of the Leiden University Library in 1610. The library, small in size but covering all the fields of arts and sciences at the time, was accommodated on the top floor of the former Faliede Bagijnkerk on Rapenburg. The larger formats were arranged by discipline in 22 so-called `plutei' , open bookcases with a fixed, sloping reading shelf on which books could be consulted, while standing. Against the back wall are the bookcases with the books in smaller format that could be locked. Above them are the portraits of William the Silent and Prince Maurice, with their escutcheons. This interior existed until 1653.
