contents: On 26 April 1557, the execution of two ' re-baptisers' or Mennonites, Joriaen Simonsz and Clement Dircksz took place on the Grote Markt in Haarlem, They were first strangled and then burned. However, when the executioners began to throw their books on the fire there was "such a commotion among the people" that they were recovered from the fire and thrown to the crowd who "grabbed them enthusiastically". The result was that "instead of suppressing the truth these books were more widely disseminated through being read by the crowd".
