contents: With the rise of nationalism in the 19th century, historical novels also became enormously popular. The stories were usually about heroic events which served as examples for the readers. Top left a novel which is placed in Friesland at the time of Willibrord, on the right an illustration by Johan Braakensiek (Jacoba of Bavaria fled in knight's clothing) from a very well known book by P. Louwerse. At the lower left two pages from a book: "De zoon van den zeerover. Hoe de Nederlandsche Republiek groot werd", with a lithograph by P.W.M. Trap and, on the right, a chapter from a book about the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 with a distinct illustration. Lithographs in one hue such as this one, which could vary in colour from grey to ochre, brown and orange, were very popular in the nineteenth century.
