contents: The Municipal Library of Amsterdam was housed from about 1578 in an annexe of the Nieuwe Kerk. Its set-up was modern and meant for the educated middle classes and for everyone who did not have the means to buy books themselves. At the moment of the removal to the attic of the Agnietenkapel in 1632 the library had some 1500 volumes.
