contents: First volume of the literary almanac "Aurora", which was to become the most prestigious literary almanac of the 19th century with editions of 1500 copies, even reaching 2000 in 1857. This first volume is dedicated to Queen Sophie, the wife of King William II, who ascended the throne in that year. The reading woman is not a portrait of her but a romantic, anonymous reader, immortalised by the Englishman F. Stone. In the Netherlands, too, the number of women who liked to read (profusely) steadily increased.
