contents: A beater, or 'hollander' is a very ingenious Dutch invention , replacing the old hammer mill and serving to wash and grind rags, the raw material for paper. When exactly it was invented cannot be determined for certain, but it probably already existed in some form or other around the middle if the 17th century. The hollander was to develop into the most used apparatus in the paper industry, until modern times. This picture shows a 19th-century type.
