The binding with the applied gilding is then laid on the carriage of the gilding press which can be seen on the right in the background on the photograph. A binder pushes the slide in and then pulls the handle of the press across. A motif or letters in gold are imprinted using tools on a blocking plate. The press is heated: for a deep shine and for durability it is necessary to heat the gilding press to the correct temperature. The man on the left is brushing off excess gilding.
