contents: The purchase of the extensive library of Isaac Vossius in 1690 made a drastic adaptation of the interior of the Leiden University Library necessary. In 1694, in the middle of the hall, a high, double bookcase was made, protected from the public on both sides by a railing. The bookcases on the walls now had doors of metal-gauze. At the back, on the south side of the library and above the entrance was a gallery with bookcases in which primarily manuscripts were kept. This was to remain the situation until 1819.
