The so-called 'Leidse boekjes' Biemans, Jos A.A.M. (fotograaf/photographer) year: ca. 1990 type: dia slide detail: nee related terms: universiteitsbibliotheken bibliotheekcatalogi period: 20e eeuw classification: J: Bibliotheken en instellingen contents: Around 1865, Leiden University Library started writing the titles of its books and periodicals by hand on slips of paper; from 1871 the titles were printed, cut and pasted on slips of paper. The slips were collected alphabetically and bound with string into oblong booklets, provided with a hollow parchment back stating the letters of the alphabet contained in that book. To insert new title slips the string was cut, the page inserted, and a new string added by the 'boekjesbinders'. The 'Leidse boekjes' were in fact an Utrecht invention, but only after their introduction in Leiden did this catalogue form become famous at home and abroad. origineel: ©description: Dr Jos A A M Biemans Leiden ©reproduction: Dr Jos A A M Biemans Leiden |
