contents: This illustration from the unique small manuscript by Dirk de Bray on bookbinding from 1658, shows how the sheets of paper on which the book is printed should be folded into gatherings. The bookbinders hold all the folded pages up against the light to check whether the text columns match up. In the foreground a binder is engaged in beating: hammering with a heavy, flat hammer on the gatherings of the book making them thinner.
