contents: Around 1549, Christopher Plantin (1520-1589), who had come from France, established himself in Antwerp where he initially worked as a bookbinder. From 1555, he also printed and opened his printing shop 'De Gulden Passer'. In 1576, he set himself up on the Vrijdagmarkt in the oldest part of what is now the Plantin-Moretus Museum. His printer's device consists of a pair of golden compasses with the motto 'Labore et Constantia' (work and tenacity).
