contents: A working paper machine of the firm of Van Gelder en Zonen, c. 1930. The diversity of kinds of paper and the specialisation of paper machines increased in the first half of the twentieth century. To oppose competition paper manufacturers made an agreement that they would each specialise in certain sorts of paper. Van Gelder specialised in newsprint, among other things, but also continued to produce the classic hand-made paper.
