contents: Top right: 'Boutade', a well-known poem by P.A. de GĂ©nestet. Many considered 19th-century books unattractive. 'The art of books has become degenerate' (Jan Veth), 'There was no art of books' (Ovink) and 'drab tedium was the reader's lot in the ordinary reading material of that time'. Hard judgements which would later be modified. From this dissatisfaction, however, the Nieuwe Kunst (Dutch Art Nouveau) book would be developed at the end of the century.
