contents: Aelius Donatus was a teacher of rhetoric in Rome around 350 BC. His work 'De partibus orationis ars minor' (usually abbreviated to 'Ars minor') was an elementary textbook for the study of grammar. Between 400 and 1500, the book, more than any other text, was used as a basis for the teaching of basic Latin, confirmed by the listing of the title in many inventories of medieval libraries. The value put on this text is also shown by references to the text in the writings of various authors from this period. Eventually, it was one of the first works multiplied by means of a printing press.
