(auteur/author) Enschedé, Joannes (uitgever/publisher) Enschedé, Izaak (uitgever/publisher) year: 1740 type: prent penning print medal detail: nee dimensions: 16,5 x 11 cm. related persons: Coster, Laurens Janszoon Holtzhey, Martinus related terms: boekdrukkunst period: 15e eeuw 18e eeuw classification: D: Geschiedenis van de boekdrukkunst contents: The print shows the front and reverse of two silver commemorative medals made by the Amsterdam medallist Martinus Holtzhey. The front of the large medal (at the top) shows, among other things, the patroness of the city giving a thanks-offering to heaven for the fortunate fact that the art of printing was invented in her town, with the city of Haarlem in the background. On the left front of the medal we see Laurens Jansz Coster in the Haarlemmerhout with a piece of type in his right hand. He is talking to Wisdom in the shape of Minerva, while the light falling upon him indicates that the art of printing `is pouring down from a higher light'. origineel: source: Seiz, Johann Christiaan. - Het derde jubeljaar der uitgevondene boekdrukkonst. - Haarlem: I. en J.
